National Unity Party (NUP) leader Dr. Lamin J. Darboe has declared that a newly formed alliance between NUP and UNITE will defeat President Adama Barrow in the 2026 presidential election, urging Gambians and other opposition parties to rally behind the partnership.
The UNITE Party and NUP formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Tuesday, cementing a political alliance to jointly contest The Gambia’s presidential election scheduled for December 5, 2026.
The signing ceremony, held at Pencha MI Hall, Paradise Suites Hotel, was attended by executive members and supporters of both parties. Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda signed on behalf of UNITE, while Dr. Darboe signed for NUP.
Darboe described the alliance as one grounded in shared political vision rather than expedience and expressed confidence it would prevail in the December 2026 polls. He called on Gambians to rally their families and communities behind the partnership, framing it as offering a fundamentally different approach to governance.
“I know this gathering here today is sending shock waves to the State House of The Gambia. It will grow from strength to strength. By the time we reach December, it will be absolutely clear who the winners of the 2026 elections will be, and that will be the UNITE-NUP alliance,” he said.
Darboe said the alliance intends to form the next government and pledged an administration that would respect citizens and residents, empower Gambians to reach their full potential, and expand opportunities for national development. He argued that good governance extends beyond physical infrastructure, stressing that any government must also prioritize improving citizens’ quality of life and managing public resources responsibly.
He urged supporters to campaign actively for the alliance’s presidential ticket of Bensouda and Darboe, and extended an invitation to other opposition parties to join the coalition. Pooling resources across opposition ranks, he argued, was essential to unseating the Barrow government, adding that the misuse of public resources was as unacceptable as arbitrary arrests and detentions.
“We encourage all of you to be ambassadors of this alliance and look for support for Talib Ahmed Bensouda and Lamin J. Darboe. We also invite other opposition parties to join us and pool their resources with us so that we can liberate this country from this bad government,” he said.
Darboe called on supporters to launch a determined campaign to remove President Barrow from office, arguing that after a decade in power, the country was ready for new leadership. He expressed hope that Barrow would respect the outcome of the vote should Gambians choose a different government in 2026.
