The Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration, and Employment has provided further guidance on the recently announced moratorium on the importation of onions and potatoes, setting clear deadlines for shipments to facilitate a smooth transition and effective implementation.

The moratorium, initially announced on Monday, January 26, 2026, is intended to regulate the import of these essential commodities.

In its statement on Friday, January 30, 2026, the Ministry specified that “clearances shall only be issued for shipments of onions and potatoes loaded onto vessels on or before 2 February 2026.” This measure ensures the orderly management of existing imports as the moratorium comes into full effect.

The Ministry emphasized that “clearances will only be issued after verification of the Bill of Lading and supporting documents submitted by importers.”

The public and business community are also reminded of the moratorium timelines. According to the Ministry, the ban on onions will be in effect from 1 March to 30 June 2026, while the restriction on potatoes will run from 1 March to 31 July 2026, unless otherwise extended.
