Yankuba Darboe, Chairman of the Brikama Area Council (BAC), has said that his decision on whether to seek a second term in office will largely depend on the outcome of the 2026 presidential election.
Speaking during an interview with QTV, Darboe said he has not yet made a final decision regarding another term as chairman.
“I have not made up my mind about it. It all depends on how we perform in the presidential election,” he said.
Darboe explained that his immediate focus is on strengthening the council and ensuring a smooth transition for his successor. He said his goal is to leave the council in a stronger financial position, with healthy accounts, a broader revenue base, and a surplus that can support future development initiatives.
The BAC chairman also highlighted several flagship programmes he hopes will continue beyond his tenure. These include the annual Ward Development Fund, which provides allocations to all wards within the region; educational support for vulnerable families to help keep children in school; and the continued expansion of waste management services.
He noted that the council plans to acquire additional waste collection vehicles to improve service delivery and achieve full coverage across the municipality.
“To acquire more vehicles so that they can be able to round up that service delivery of waste collection from where we are now to 100 percent,” he said.
Darboe further stated that his administration has put measures in place to ensure the sustainability of ongoing projects and development programmes. According to him, the council is now more financially stable, development-oriented, and better equipped to deliver services than it was when he assumed office.
He expressed confidence that the foundations laid during his tenure will enable future administrations to build on the council’s progress and continue advancing development across the West Coast Region.
