On day 6 of the parliamentary election nomination, candidates under the People’s Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS) ticket submitted their papers to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) regional offices across the country.

In the Kanifing Municipality, PDOIS have 4 candidates, Aminata Correa, vying for Latrikunda Sabiji, Musa Cham, for Serekunda, Fatou Sowe- Jaiteh, for Serekunda West, and Ebrima K. Ceesay, for Tallinding Kunjang. All of them submitted the required documents, except for the campaign itinerary.

In the West Coast Region (WCR), party’s aspirants:  Victor P. Jatta, aspirant for Sanementereng has a pending document (proof of citizenship- Passport/ID/Voter card), to complete his nomination; as well as Pa Alieu Njie, aspirant for Old Yundum o also has a pending document (1-year leave of absence letter), to complete his nomination, latest 13th March. However, Nyima Lisa Kujabi, aspirant for Busumbala has submitted all required documents. She now waits for the commission’s approval.

Other PDOIS candidates in the other regions also submitted their documents to IEC offices across the country.

Meanwhile, Almameh Gibba, independent aspirant for Foni Kansala has submitted all required documents for nomination at the IEC West Coast Region office, also waiting for the commission’s approval.

The National Assembly, one of the 3 arms of government, is crucial in a democratic process through its oversight, law-making, representation and resource allocation functions, among others.

While some candidates have received their acceptance letters from the electoral commission, the latest to submit their qualifications are expecting to hear from the commission the fate of their application in the coming days.
This time, unlike the presidential election nomination in 2021, candidates will not be rejected for falling short of documents required for the process prior to the deadline for the end of nomination; instead, they would be allowed to submit the outstanding details for consideration, latest 13th March.

Nomination continues today (Day 7) for independent candidates at the Independent Electoral Commission’ regional offices across the country; with at least 20 independent aspirants expected.
