The new amendments, according to United Democratic Party officials, seeks to bring the party’s constitution in line with the country’s laws
The United Democratic Party has adopted a constitutional amendment barring public servants from holding positions in its national executive.
The new amendment which was adopted at a congress on Saturday will disqualified any public servant from contesting for positions in its national congress.
The congress which started on Friday ends on Sunday with a rally to be held at the Buffer Zone.
“A person holding an office in a public service shall not hold office in the National Executive Committee…,” reads a part of the constitution.
The amendment which was already adopted has not gone down well with public servants who are currently vying for positions in the party.
Also part of the amendments states that “an aspiring candidate for the congress shall be a bona fide member of the party and a delegate or a member of the outgoing executive committee”.
This clause could disqualify anyone who resigned from the party.
According to the new amendments in the constitution, for anyone to be able to contest for any position at the congress, he or she “shall be a Gambian” residing in the country at least a year period to the date of the national congress.
The new changes also states that the Party’s National Assembly member shall be its constituency head and shall preside over the constituency executive meetings.
