ANM Ousainu Darboe, party leader and flagbearer of the main opposition United Democratic Party (UDP), has reiterated that while the party remains open to alliances, it will only enter coalitions grounded in clear principles rather than political expediency.

In an interview with DW Africa, Darboe was asked whether the UDP would consider partnering with former allies, including Kanifing Municipal Council Mayor Talib Bensouda, in a bid to unseat President Adama Barrow. In response, he noted that political splits among former allies are often marked by lingering bitterness and mistrust.

“So we are open to a coalition with any party. A coalition built on principles,” Darboe said. “You have to accept our principles. You have to accept what we stand for for us to work with you. And that is for any party. We are not going into coalitions just for convenience.”

Darboe pointed to the 2016 opposition alliance that ushered President Barrow into power as an example of what the UDP seeks to avoid.

“It was a coalition of convenience, not a coalition built on principles. So we will not allow it, we will not be part of any coalition that is just for convenience.”

He stressed that any future coalition involving the UDP must be anchored in mutual trust and a shared commitment to the national interest. According to him, the party is willing to collaborate with any political group that demonstrates genuine alignment with these ideals.

Darboe also raised concerns about political parties formed primarily to secure power through alliances, arguing that such formations lack ideological grounding. He maintained that any credible political party should have the conviction and capacity to govern independently.
