Seedy Njie insists negotiations on draft constitution haven’t failed

Seedy Njie who represented the National People’s Party (NPP) at the talks on the draft constitution in Abuja earlier this week insisted that the negotiations haven’t failed.

Mr Njie made the remarks on The Brunch, a weekly talk show on Kerr Fatou,.

“It hasn’t failed, progress has been made. The Abuja meeting achieved a lot, because there are some political parties who had some differences on some issues, but in Abuja, all the political parties tried to trade in and move from one position to another towards the end of tunnel,” Njie insisted

It was reported that the representatives at the talks failed to reach an agreement on whether President Barrow’s current term should be counted as the first of the two-term limit in the draft, among contentious issues.

The disagreement on the retroactive clause is evident by a recent tweet by the United Democratic Party (UDP), one of the representatives at the negotiations.

The meeting was part of a mediation process led by former Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan and sponsored by IDEA. It’s meant to get the stakeholders agree on the contentious issues in draft constitution rejected by certain members of the National Assembly last September.

The talks are scheduled to continue in The Gambia in March when Jonathan returns.
