Gambians continue to send messages of condolences to the family of fallen Gambian journalist Pa Nderry M’bai, who died in the U.S on Monday.

President Adama Barrow and the United Democratic Party Leader Lawyer Ousainu Darboe are among many Gambians who took to social media to send their condolences to the Mbai family.

“It was so sad that the country woke up to the news of the passing away of veteran journalist, Pa Nderry Mbye, proprietor of Freedom Newspaper. Pa Nderry through his online paper contributed a lot in the struggle to liberate The Gambia from dictatorship. I extend my condolences to his family and pray that Allah grants him mercy and make ‘Jannahtul Firdawsi’ his lasting abode,” President Adama Barrow Barrow wrote.

Lawyer Ousainu Darboe said: “It is with sadness that we learnt of the passing of Pa Nderry M’bai, the pioneer of Gambian online radio journalism. His dedication to fighting dictatorship and restoring democracy to The Gambia was legendary. He provided an outlet for many and became one of the important vehicles through which citizens could be sensitised. My Party, the UDP and I extend our sincere condolences to The M’bai family both in the USA and in The Gambia, The people of Nyamina, The Gambian diaspora, The Media fraternity and friends of Freedom Radio and Newspaper”.

“Mr. Pa Nderry Mbai is one of the few journalists who was a devoted anti-corruption and social justice fighter using the power of journalism to bring governments and institutions to account. Mr Mbai rigorously used both his Freedom Newspaper and Freedom Radio to amplify and criticise policies and the ills of the Gambia Government, especially in the Jammeh regime. The demise of the fearless Gambian journalist caught many by surprise. It’s always hard to believe the loss that death suddenly brings,” a journalist Sainey MK Marena also mourned M’bai.

Head of Brands and Communication at OIC Gambia, Nfally Fadera, also joined the mourners: “I am saddened to hear news of the demise of veteran journalist Pa Nderry MBai and would like to extend deep condolences to his family, friends, listeners, and the entire country country large. Pa has done a lot that I disagreed with in the course of his work, at the same time, however, he also contributed a lot to exposing the chicanery we had and where we are today. Where I come from, you do not speak ill of the dead. As such, I wish to share that in my attempts to improve the media relations of my principals/employers, be they State House or the OICGambia Secretariat, I reached out to him and found him to be very warm, respectful, and supportive.”

Pa Nderry Mbaye is a Gambian journalist based in America. He is the founder of the famous Freedom Radio and Newspaper.
