The Organization of West Africa Youth has officially endorsed Dr. Mamadou Tangara, Gambia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, for the role of Commonwealth Secretary-General.
Dr. Tangara is vying for the prestigious position against Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey of Ghana and Senator Joshua Septiba from Lesotho.
“We are writing on behalf of the Organization of West Africa Youth to express our strong support for the candidacy of Dr. Mamadou Tangara for the position of Secretary-General of the Commonwealth. Dr. Tangara’s commitment to upholding the values and principles of the Commonwealth of Nations aligns with our organization’s vision for a more inclusive and progressive Commonwealth,” the organization stated in a statement.
The youth organization praised Dr. Tangara’s manifesto, which they emphasize will strengthen parliamentary democracy, advance progressive legislation, and bolster the oversight responsibilities of Select Committees—all critical to addressing the pressing needs of Commonwealth nations.
“His dedication to these principles resonates with us as an organization that values democracy, youth empowerment, and sustainable development,” they say.
Particularly noteworthy, the organization emphasized, is Dr. Tangara’s focus on youth engagement, pointing out that 60% of the Commonwealth’s population is under 30.
“His experience coming from a youthful population in The Gambia, where 64% are aged 30 and below, demonstrates his understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing young people today. We believe that Dr. Tangara’s plan to involve youth in decision-making processes and program implementation will not only empower young individuals but also contribute to the rebranding of the Commonwealth as a forward-thinking and inclusive institution,” the statement continued.
Furthermore, the organization also expresses appreciation for Dr. Tangara’s ‘commitment’ to gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls across the Commonwealth.
“His pledge to create inclusive decision-making spaces and affirmative measures to ensure equal representation underscores his dedication to promoting diversity and inclusivity within the organization,” they said.In conclusion, the organization called on Commonwealth leaders to back Dr. Tangara’s candidacy.
“His vision, experience, and dedication to the values of the Commonwealth make him a strong candidate to lead the organization towards a more prosperous and equitable future for all its members. Thank you for considering our endorsement of Dr. Tangara’s candidacy. We look forward to witnessing the positive impact he will have on the Commonwealth if elected as Secretary-General,” the organization concluded.
