Former Gambian diplomat and Coalition 2026 member Essa Bokarr Sey has expressed confidence that all presidential aspirants will be cleared to contest the December 5 election, predicting a peaceful transfer of power through the ballot box.

In a video message addressed to Gambians at home and abroad, Sey outlined three critical stages of the electoral process that he believes the country will navigate peacefully: presidential nominations, the campaign period, and the election itself.

He dismissed speculation that some aspirants could be disqualified during nominations, describing such claims as unfounded.

Sey maintained that all candidates would be allowed to participate, arguing that their eligibility must be determined by law rather than political interests.

He expressed particular confidence in the eligibility of the candidate he supports, emphasizing that The Gambia is governed by laws that must be respected.

“Remove all pollutants from your minds and understand that this is the way politics goes,” he said.

Sey reminded Gambians that all stakeholders in the electoral process, including candidates, lawmakers, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), and voters, share a common responsibility to safeguard the country’s interests.

He identified the successful completion of nominations, a peaceful campaign period, and the election of a new government as the three milestones he expects the country to achieve.

The former diplomat urged Gambians to set aside fears and political tensions, emphasizing that elections are a democratic process rather than a confrontation.

He also encouraged citizens to turn out in large numbers on election day, noting that every candidate enters the race with the expectation of winning.

Sey cautioned voters against violence and urged them to distance themselves from individuals seeking to disrupt the electoral process.

He stressed that political competition should not lead to hostility, reminding Gambians that the electoral process involves three straightforward stages: nominations, campaigning, and voting.

His remarks come as political parties and presidential aspirants prepare for the December 5 election, with Sey expressing optimism that the process will culminate in a peaceful change of government.
