Outgoing Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda has pledged to strengthen local government authorities by granting them greater autonomy, adequate funding, and institutional support if elected president.

Bensouda said local councils are best positioned to understand and address the needs of their communities but often lack the resources and independence necessary to deliver essential services effectively.

Reflecting on his more than eight years as mayor, he said KMC had faced political interference and institutional restrictions that undermined its ability to fully serve residents.

“If entrusted with national leadership, I will work towards a system in which every local government authority receives fair treatment, adequate resources, and the freedom to contribute meaningfully to national development,” he said.

Bensouda emphasized that local councils should not face discrimination based on the political affiliations of their elected leaders. Instead, he argued, they should be recognized as essential partners in national development and given the support needed to fulfill their mandates.

He also expressed hope that the next KMC administration would build on his achievements and complete projects initiated during his tenure.

Reflecting on his years in public office, Bensouda said leadership should be judged by its impact on people’s lives rather than the positions individuals hold.

He urged residents to continue supporting the council while holding their elected representatives accountable and demanding results, regardless of who occupies the mayor’s office.
