Honorable Kebba Lang Fofana, Nominated Member of the National Assembly, has called on The Gambia to draw critical lessons from China’s green energy transformation as the country seeks to address its own energy challenges and advance its sustainable development goals.

Hon. Fofana recently participated in a Seminar on Global Green and Sustainable Development held from June 5th to 18th, 2025, in Fujian Province, People’s Republic of China. Reflecting on his experience, he emphasized the importance of policy alignment, technological innovation, and international cooperation in tackling The Gambia’s persistent rural energy access gaps.

“China’s recent economic development reflects a complex landscape of resilient growth amid structural challenges, driven by policy stimulus, digital transformation, and shifting global dynamics. As a nation with significant rural energy access challenges and vulnerability to climate change, The Gambia can draw valuable lessons from China’s green energy transition and sustainable development model,” he said.

Hon. Fofana highlighted that China’s green success is largely attributed to coordinated domestic policies, aggressive renewable energy expansion, and robust international partnerships.

“The past few weeks have taught me that China’s green achievements stem from synergistic domestic policies, massive renewable deployment, and global partnerships. Its success in solar/wind expansion, storage innovation, and EU collaboration sets benchmarks worldwide. However, sustaining progress requires resolving coal transition risks and market reforms. As China’s green capacity reshapes global energy dynamics, its model offers actionable pathways for other nations pursuing sustainability,” he said.

He stressed that while China’s strategies offer a useful framework, they must be tailored to The Gambia’s unique context.

“By adapting China’s strategies to our local context, we must ensure policy coherence, technological adaptation, and partnerships that create a balance between green energy, sustainable development, and our obligation to provide a higher standard of living for our people,” he said.

Hon. Fofana also reflected on China’s broader development story, describing it as an inspiring journey from poverty to global prominence.

“A true reflection that once a people embraces what unites them over and above the trivial lines of division, the letters “I and M” become liquidated from the word “impossible,” giving way to greater opportunities and possibilities,” he said.
