National Unity Party (NUP) leader Lamin J. Darboe has called on members of the newly formed alliance between the NUP and UNITE to reject political insults and violence, pledging that the coalition will campaign on ideas, policies, and respectful engagement as it seeks to unseat the incumbent government in the 2026 presidential election.
Speaking at the signing ceremony for the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two parties, Darboe said the alliance was founded on shared principles and would not tolerate the use of its platform to attack political opponents through personal insults.
“We know that these two parties are anchored in ideas. You will not hear us insult anybody because insults are not arguments. Insults are just the conversation of those without ideas. We are not those people, and we will not be those people. If you want to do that, you can go to other parties, but we will not allow our members to use our organizations to insult other people,” Darboe said.
Darboe described the alliance as a significant political development for The Gambia and expressed confidence that it would emerge victorious in the December 2026 presidential election. He argued that Gambians are ready for a change in leadership and said the NUP-UNITE partnership is positioning itself to form the country’s next government.
According to Darboe, the alliance is driven by a shared vision for national development rather than political expediency. He said the progress of countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Japan demonstrates the importance of ideas, strong institutions, and good governance—principles he said the alliance intends to champion in The Gambia.
Darboe also praised UNITE leader and Kanifing Municipal Council Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda, describing him as a forward-looking young leader whose record at the council reflects his capacity to deliver tangible results.
He said Bensouda’s leadership, integrity, and commitment to public service had strengthened his confidence in the partnership, adding that the alliance believes those qualities will bolster its campaign as it prepares for the 2026 presidential election.
