Lamin Ceesay, the National Assembly Member for Kiang West, has declared that his constituency remains firmly aligned with the United Democratic Party (UDP), despite recent political movements and reported defections to the ruling National People’s Party (NPP).

Speaking on Kerr Fatou’s Politic Kacha program, Ceesay addressed claims that several individuals had crossed from the UDP to the NPP during President Adama Barrow’s recent road inauguration in Kiang Jiffarong.

He dismissed the significance of the reported cross-carpeting, arguing that many of those announced as new NPP members were already affiliated with the ruling party.

The NAM also suggested that the political reception in Kiang West during the president’s visit was less enthusiastic compared to other parts of the country. He claimed that even within government circles, concerns were raised about turnout at the event.

“UDP is not a joke when it comes to Kiang West. President Barrow was not happy in Kiang West during his last meeting. Everywhere, he did a launch. Kiang West’s launch was the poorest,” Ceesay stated.

He further asserted that the level of support for the opposition UDP in the area remains unchanged, insisting that the constituency’s political identity is “non-negotiable.” According to him, a rally held by the UDP in Kiang Jiffarong would attract a larger crowd than the presidential event held there.

Ceesay also questioned the sustainability of infrastructure projects in the region, expressing skepticism about the durability of recently constructed roads. He argued that, beyond development projects, residents of Kiang West remain more concerned about the rising cost of living.

“The most pressing issue for the people of Kiang is the cost of living,” he added.

His comments come amid heightened political activity in the region, where both the ruling party and the opposition continue to court support ahead of future electoral contests.
