Kemo Bojang, the deputy party leader for political matters and media relations of the UNITE Party, has said Talib Ahmed Bensouda is the opposition figure best positioned to defeat President Adama Barrow in the 2026 presidential election.
Speaking in an interview with Star TV, Mr. Bojang pointed to Mr. Bensouda’s record as mayor of the Kanifing Municipal Council, arguing that his performance in local government has demonstrated his ability to deliver development and strengthened his case for the presidency.
“Talib is the one that is going to end the regime of President Adama Barrow, and Barrow knows that,” Mr. Bojang said. “They are discussing Talib’s issue in the State House every day, on how they are going to stop him, but they cannot do that.”
Mr. Bojang did not provide evidence to support his assertion that Mr. Bensouda is discussed daily at the State House.
He acknowledged that Mr. Bensouda, the leader of UNITE, was not without shortcomings but argued that his record at the municipal council distinguished him from other local government leaders in the country.
Mr. Bojang cited the construction and improvement of facilities for schoolchildren, parks, markets, and other public infrastructure in the municipality as examples of Mr. Bensouda’s record.
“I am not saying that Talib Bensouda is perfect, but there is no mayor that has done what he has done for the people of KMC,” Mr. Bojang said. “And there is no chairman, since we started having area councils in this country, that has done what Talib has done.”
Mr. Bensouda, who has served as mayor of Kanifing since 2018, is seeking to translate his record in municipal government into broader national support as the country moves toward the 2026 presidential election.
Mr. Bojang said the current generation of Gambians had a responsibility to pursue political change, expressing confidence that Mr. Bensouda could play a leading role in that effort and mount a serious challenge to President Barrow’s continued rule.
