Information, Media, and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr. Ismaila Ceesay has warned that The Gambia would make its “biggest mistake” by voting the Barrow administration out of office in favor of what he described as an inexperienced, divided, and unprepared opposition.

Speaking in an interview on West Coast Radio, Ceesay argued that governing requires experience and competence, saying campaign promises alone are insufficient to address the country’s challenges.

“Government is serious business. Promises alone don’t change things; you need to deliver. The people going around telling the public to vote for them and they will do X, Y, and Z—they cannot do it. Government is complex,” he said.

The minister also accused the opposition of using social media to spread misinformation and manipulate public opinion, claiming similar tactics have led to disappointing outcomes in several African countries over the past decade.

Although he declined to identify specific countries, citing diplomatic reasons, Ceesay said many electorates had later regretted replacing incumbent governments because “expectations are not met by reality.”

He pointed to Ethiopia as an example, alleging that an opposition party had promised to reduce the cost of basic commodities immediately after taking office. According to Ceesay, four years later, prices of essential goods have instead continued to rise.
