The Gambia has been ranked the fourth most peaceful country in Africa in the 2026 Global Peace Index (GPI), according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services on Tuesday, June 23.

The ministry welcomed the latest ranking, describing it as a reflection of the country’s continued progress in maintaining safety and security, reducing internal conflict, and strengthening national stability.

According to the statement, the recognition highlights ongoing efforts to consolidate peace, deepen democratic governance, and foster social cohesion across the country.

“The Government views this recognition as a result of the collective commitment of Gambians, the security services, civil society organisations, and development partners in preserving national peace and unity,” the ministry stated.

The government further noted that the ranking underscores its commitment to strengthening democratic institutions, upholding the rule of law, and advancing inclusive socio-economic development.

Officials said the achievement serves as an encouragement to sustain efforts aimed at safeguarding the country’s peace and stability, which they described as essential pillars of national development.

The ministry also called on citizens to continue promoting peace, tolerance, and national unity, emphasizing that these values remain critical to The Gambia’s progress and prosperity.

The Global Peace Index is an internationally recognized measure of peacefulness that assesses countries based on indicators including societal safety and security, the extent of ongoing conflict, and levels of militarization.
