President Adama Barrow has assured that no individual will be subjected to unjust treatment in the implementation of the Commission of Inquiry report into local government councils.

The report was formally presented to the President on Monday at the State House in Banjul by the commission’s chairperson.

“Let me clearly state that, in fulfillment of the government’s responsibilities, no person will suffer any unjust treatment,” President Barrow said. “All persons affected by the recommendations of the Commission will have their right to a fair hearing respected, and every action taken will be within the confines of the law.”

The President indicated that the government will undertake a thorough and impartial review of the report before making any decisions.

“Following receipt of the report today, the Government will study it carefully and responsibly,” he said. “Through appropriate legal, administrative, and institutional channels, we will comprehensively review the Commission’s findings and recommendations.”

President Barrow further announced that a white paper will be issued to outline the government’s official position and the steps to be taken after the review process. “Government will prepare and issue a White Paper outlining its position and the next steps and actions to take,” he stated.

He emphasized that any implementation of accepted recommendations will strictly adhere to constitutional provisions, including reforms, administrative measures, and the recovery of public funds where necessary.

“I assure the Commission and the public that the Government will implement all recommendations accepted in the White Paper in accordance with the Constitution,” he said.

The President underscored the importance of fairness and due process in ensuring accountability.

“Accountability must be fair, objective, and guided by the principles of natural justice,” he noted. “Its objective is not only to identify misconduct and shortcomings but also to correct them and prevent their recurrence.”

He also called on public institutions to embrace the findings of the inquiry as an opportunity for reform.

“I urge our institutions to welcome the report and draw lessons from the inquiry to strengthen governance structures, safeguard public resources, and reinforce public trust,” he said. “Let the lessons learned improve local government administration and support the decentralization framework that our people deserve.”

President Barrow concluded by commending the commission for successfully carrying out its mandate.
