Essa Mbye Faal has withdrawn from the race to become Coalition 2026’s presidential flagbearer just minutes before delegates were due to cast their final votes.
Coalition members had spent the day in negotiations aimed at resolving differences among the parties and reaching a consensus on a single candidate. According to sources familiar with the discussions, Faal’s camp proposed that the candidate who finished second in the leadership contest should automatically become the running mate of the eventual winner.
The proposal failed to gain the support of the other contenders. Before an agreement could be reached, Faal entered the meeting and announced his withdrawal, saying he could not continue after his running mate proposal was rejected.
Faal said he decided to exit the contest because coalition members were unable to agree on the running mate arrangement, adding that he no longer believed the selection process would be fair.
