Joseph Colley, Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), has reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to conducting free, fair, transparent, and inclusive elections as the country prepares for the 2026 polls.
Speaking at the IEC’s monthly stakeholder forum, Chairman Colley noted that the Commission maintains an open-door policy and encouraged members of the public and stakeholders to seek accurate information directly from the IEC, saying this would help curb the spread of misinformation on electoral matters.
“The IEC bears a constitutional and legal responsibility to ensure all eligible Gambians are enfranchised and that all processes to procure and protect the franchise are managed openly and transparently,” he said.
He added that the Commission would give favorable consideration to any reasonable public request that does not compromise the integrity of the electoral process.
Chairman Colley said engagement with stakeholders often produces common ground, though divergent views and unresolved concerns do arise on occasion. He described such differences as a natural reflection of a democratic environment and assured participants that the Commission would sustain its collaboration with stakeholders to maintain clarity throughout the current electoral cycle and beyond.
Also addressing the forum, IEC Vice Chairman Cherno Jallow assured participants that the Commission would not engage in anything that could undermine the integrity and credibility of the voter register. He reiterated that the IEC remains transparent and open in its operations, with no hidden agenda.
