Former National Assembly Member for Niamina East, Hon. Omar Ceesay, has formally resigned from the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), citing the party’s recent alliance with President Adama Barrow’s National People’s Party (NPP).
In a resignation letter dated August 2, 2026, and addressed to the GDC’s senior administrative secretary in Kololi, Hon. Ceesay said the decision was not taken lightly. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to have served the party and its ideals during his tenure as a National Assembly Member.
The former lawmaker said the party’s decision last week to align with the ruling NPP prompted him to re-examine his personal convictions.
Hon. Ceesay said his resignation is rooted in his commitment to democratic principles and leadership renewal. “It is my firm belief that no president should serve for more than two terms,” he wrote, adding that he could no longer reconcile that position with the party’s current direction.
He described stepping aside as the honest course of action, one that allowed him to remain true to his beliefs, and wished the GDC and its leadership well in their future endeavors.
