Talib Ahmed Bensouda, the leader of the UNITE party, on Tuesday invited other opposition parties to join a new alliance between UNITE and the National Unity Party, saying the partnership was designed to remain open as the country approaches the 2026 presidential election.
Speaking at the signing ceremony for the alliance, Mr. Bensouda said UNITE and the National Unity Party, led by Lamin J. Darboe, had established a framework that other parties could join.
“We have laid a foundation that is easy to join,” Mr. Bensouda said. “If you study Lamin J. Darboe’s attitude and my own, they are similar. We are open to ideas and more partnerships, so come and join us for the change that is about to happen on December 5.”
Mr. Bensouda said the alliance was intended to place cooperation and the interests of Gambians above the ambitions of individual political parties. He called on opposition leaders to unite around the goal of defeating the incumbent government.
He also criticized the government’s handling of national security and developments affecting communities along the country’s borders, arguing that they underscored the need for a change in leadership.
Addressing President Adama Barrow, Mr. Bensouda urged him to concentrate on protecting Gambians during the remainder of his term.
“Adama Barrow, I have told you not once, not twice, stop drifting and work hard for the remaining months you have in office to protect the Gambian people,” he said. “After that, you can pack your files and leave our State House.”
