The Majority Leader of The Gambia’s National Assembly, Billay G. Tunkara, on Wednesday expressed confidence that President Adama Barrow would win the country’s December 2026 presidential election, while calling on political leaders and citizens to conduct themselves peacefully throughout the campaign period.
Speaking as he moved a motion to adjourn the National Assembly’s Second Ordinary Session of the 2026 Legislative Year, Tunkara urged lawmakers to congratulate President Barrow in advance of what he described as an inevitable victory.
“Honourable Speaker, I call on you to congratulate His Excellency President Adama Barrow, as victory is certain, come December 2026,” he said.
Tunkara appealed to Gambians to remain law-abiding during the election season and cautioned political parties and their supporters against inflammatory rhetoric, saying responsible public discourse is essential to preserving the country’s democratic gains.
“We must all remain guided as we speak to build this country and strengthen our democratic experience,” he said.
He also reminded members of the National Assembly of their constitutional responsibility to attend sittings regularly and maintain a quorum, urging lawmakers to continue carrying out their duties with dignity, impartiality, and commitment.
Reviewing the Assembly’s work during the session, Tunkara cited the consideration of ministerial statements and bills, the adoption of committee reports, and the establishment of the Standing Committee on Government Assurances, which he said would strengthen parliamentary oversight and improve executive accountability.
The National Assembly adjourned the session without an adjournment debate. Lawmakers are expected to undertake committee oversight activities during the recess before Parliament reconvenes in September for the joint Third and Fourth Ordinary Sessions.
