Young Gambian International Sprinter Dies After Brief Illness

Edrissa Marong, the young Gambian international sprinter and national record holder in the 800M sprint event, died on Tuesday morning after a brief illness.

Marong was popularly known by his track name Energy. He attended Botrop Senior Secondary School, where he won multiple awards in track and field events. Marong also represented the Gambia at numerous international competitions, including the ECOWAS Athletic Youth championship. 

The track and field sensation was the National record holder for 800 meters. 

The Gambia Athletic Association (GAA) has confirmed the news of his untimely death on its official Facebook page. 

“The GAA announces with regret the demise of Edrissa Marong, National Record holder in the 800 Metres. This sad event occurred last night after a brief illness. He will be laid to rest today. Funeral arrangements will be communicated as and when received. May his gentle soul rest in peace,” the Association announced.
