The OIC road infrastructure project is heralded as a transformative solution to urban congestion, promising improved traffic flow and enhanced connectivity. However, the reality on the ground tells a different story.

Despite the hype, the project has failed to deliver meaningful improvements in traffic movement along the urban corridor bringing to the fore critical issues such as design flaws, inefficiency, and corruption that have undermined the project’s effectiveness and raised serious doubts about its effect on the chronic traffic problem that zap productivity in urban Gambia.

One of the most glaring deficiencies of the OIC road infrastructure project is its evident lack of thoughtful design. The absence of exit ramps has effectively cut off access to commercial areas on either side of the road, exacerbating congestion and creating traffic chokeholds, particularly evident at locations like the Brusubi turntable.

The baffling decision to prioritize vehicular traffic over pedestrian accessibility in a densely populated and commercialized area raises questions about the competence and rationality of the design team. It is incredulous to conceive of a highway project without due consideration for the needs of pedestrians and local businesses, highlighting a profound oversight in the planning process.

Despite substantial investment and extensive planning, the OIC road infrastructure project has failed to yield the anticipated improvements in traffic flow. Instead, gridlock persists unabated, with certain areas experiencing worsening congestion over time. This inefficiency can be attributed to a range of factors, including poor project management, inadequate resource allocation, and a lack of coordination among stakeholders.

Furthermore, the failure to implement timely interventions and corrective measures has allowed issues to fester, exacerbating the situation and eroding public confidence in the project’s efficacy. The pervasive inefficiencies plaguing the project underscore systemic failures and the urgent need for comprehensive reform in infrastructure planning and execution.

In addition to design flaws and inefficiencies, the OIC road infrastructure project has been marred by allegations of corruption and malfeasance. Reports of kickbacks, bribery, and collusion have cast a shadow over the project’s integrity, raising serious concerns about the transparency and ethical conduct of those involved. It is evident that vested interests and personal agendas have superseded the public good, compromising the project’s effectiveness and undermining public trust in government institutions.

The prevalence of corruption not only undermines the credibility of infrastructure initiatives but also perpetuates inequality and impedes socio-economic development. Addressing these entrenched issues requires a concerted effort to combat corruption and promote accountability, transparency, and integrity in all aspects of governance.

The failure of the OIC road infrastructure project to deliver on its promises serves as a stark reminder of the perils of design flaws, inefficiency, and corruption in public infrastructure initiatives. By examining the critical issues that have hampered the project’s effectiveness, we can glean valuable insights for future endeavors. It is imperative that stakeholders prioritize transparency, accountability, and stakeholder engagement to ensure that infrastructure projects effectively address the needs of the communities they serve. Only through concerted efforts to address these systemic challenges can we hope to build resilient, equitable, and sustainable infrastructure for the future.
