President Adama Barrow of the Gambia praised his Senegalese counterpart President Macky Sall on Tuesday for his decision to step down in 2024, saying that it sets a good example for other African leaders.

“Your Excellency, you have set an example for other African leaders to follow, especially those whose constitutions prescribe term limits,” Barrow said. “Your courage and consideration for democracy to strive is worth commendation.”

Barrow said that Sall’s decision to voluntarily step down after two terms as president has “not only generated hope but also revitalized the democratic aspirations of his citizens, ECOWAS, and the sub-region.”

He made these remarks at the 3rd Senegalo-Gambia Presidential Council meeting at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara Conference Center in Bijilo.
