Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) leader Mama Kandeh has categorically denied recent claims that he and his family visited President Adama Barrow at his residence in Mankamang Kunda. Responding to allegations made by Imam Sanyang, Kandeh dismissed the report as unfounded and emphasized his commitment to national unity and peace.
“You [Imam Sanyang] claimed that my family and I visited President Barrow and his family in Mankamang Kunda. I don’t know where that information came from, but since 2016 to date, I have never set foot in President Barrow’s compound, let alone held any discussions with him,” Kandeh stated.
The GDC leader reiterated that he founded the party not to appease individuals, but to contribute meaningfully to the country’s development and stability.
“My objective is not to please anyone personally. Many are talking, but they don’t seem to follow my public statements or listen to my press conferences. I have not had any personal conflict with President Barrow, Ousainou Darboe, Halifa Sallah, or any other politician. My position is clear: I prioritize the interest of The Gambia above all else,” he said.
Kandeh stressed that collaboration for national progress should not be politicized.
“If peace and development in The Gambia require working with the United Democratic Party (UDP), I will do that. If it means working with President Barrow, I am open to that too. My doors are open to all Gambians, regardless of party affiliation, so long as it serves the best interest of our country,” he emphasized.
He condemned the spread of misinformation and politically motivated attacks, referencing similar accusations made against him in the past.
“In 2016, they said I was Jammeh’s candidate, that we shared the same marabout, even that we exchanged clothes. They went as far as linking me to Al-Qaeda. I will not accept that kind of dirty politics again,” he asserted.
Kandeh concluded by urging citizens to focus on constructive dialogue and national progress rather than personal attacks and false narratives.
“Let’s do politics when the time comes, but outside of that, I have never had any quarrel or dispute with Barrow—our differences are only political. From childhood to now, that has not changed. I have not visited his residence since 2016, but even if I had, what would be wrong with that? Let’s move away from toxic politics,” he said.
