Government Waives Import Duties and Domestic Taxes on Livestock Ahead of Tobaski
By Buba Gagigo
In preparation for the upcoming Tobaski feast, the Government of The Gambia has announced a series of measures aimed at facilitating livestock importation and sales. These initiatives, effective from May 27, 2025, were detailed in a press statement issued by the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration, and Employment (MOTIE).
Following a consultative meeting held on May 15, 2025, with key stakeholders in the livestock sector, the government outlined the following interventions:
- Import Duties and Taxes: The Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA) will waive all import duties and domestic taxes on livestock throughout the specified period.
- Ferry Crossing Fees: GPA Ferry Services will reduce ferry crossing fees by 50% for livestock dealers. Additionally, dealers transporting more than ten animals are required to use vehicles during ferry crossings.
- Local Council Fees: Both the Banjul City Council and Brikama Area Council will exempt livestock dealers from all related fees and taxes during this time.
- Designated Livestock Sales Points: To enhance accessibility, the government has designated specific locations for livestock sales:
- Brikama Area Council (BAC) Locations:
- Central Livestock Market (near The Gambia College)
- Tippa Garage (close to Kassa Kunda Junction on Gunjur Highway)
- Youth Centre, Brikama
- Sukuta Roundabout
- Sukuta Highway to Market
- Brikama “Nyambaye” Forest, starting from Farato
- Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) Locations:
- Along Bertil Harding Highway near Independent Stadium
- Buffer Zone
- Abuko Abattoir
- Brikama Area Council (BAC) Locations:
- Security Measures: The Gambia Police Force will increase security presence, particularly at designated sales points, to ensure safety during the period.
- Facilitation of Dealer Entry: The Gambia Immigration Department will expedite entry procedures for livestock dealers, issuing laissez-passer free of charge to individuals from ECOWAS member states as needed.
The Ministry urges all livestock dealers to carry valid identification documents—including national ID cards, laissez-passer, or equivalent identification—to facilitate smooth verification and entry processes.
Minister Bubacarr O. Joof emphasized that these measures aim to reduce barriers and promote efficient trade in livestock ahead of Tobaski, encouraging all dealers to take advantage of the government’s support.
