The Inspector General of Police, Seedy Mucktarr Touray, has warned against violence and intimidation ahead of The Gambia’s December 5 presidential election, declaring that political affiliation will not shield anyone from prosecution for criminal conduct.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony of 870 police recruits at the Serrekunda Mini Stadium, Mr. Touray emphasized the importance of impartiality, professionalism, and discipline within the police force as the country prepares for the 2026 presidential election.

He said the police have a responsibility to protect lives and property, maintain public order, and ensure a peaceful environment in which citizens can exercise their democratic rights without fear or intimidation.

The police chief stressed that law enforcement decisions must be guided strictly by the law rather than political loyalties, personal preferences, or partisan considerations.

He issued a stern warning to individuals and groups contemplating violence, intimidation, assault, destruction of property, or other criminal activities during the electoral period.

“I am now issuing a clear warning to anyone planning violence and/or intimidation, assault, property destruction, or other crimes during the electoral period,” Mr. Touray said.

“Political affiliation provides no immunity from the law,” he added.

Mr. Touray made clear that the police would not allow individuals or groups to threaten national peace and stability under the guise of political activity.

At the same time, he underscored the distinction between legitimate political expression and criminal conduct, stressing that lawful political participation, peaceful assembly, and criticism must be respected and protected in accordance with the law.

He said the police would uphold those fundamental rights while taking action against individuals who engage in unlawful activities, regardless of their political affiliations.

The inspector general also called on political leaders, party supporters, and the wider public to exercise restraint and respect the laws governing the electoral process.

He urged all stakeholders to uphold the principles necessary for peaceful, credible, and orderly elections, emphasizing that maintaining national stability is a collective responsibility.
