The National Assembly Member for Central Badibou, Hon. Sulayman Saho, has described the recent political defections in Mariama Kunda as a reflection of a broader shift in The Gambia’s political landscape.

Speaking at a United Democratic Party (UDP) community engagement in Mariama Kunda, where several supporters of the ruling National People’s Party (NPP), including the party’s former chairman in the area, publicly declared their allegiance to the UDP, Hon. Saho said the developments demonstrated growing public confidence in the opposition party.

He noted that many residents who had previously supported the NPP were now choosing to align themselves with the UDP for what he described as clear and compelling reasons. According to him, the turnout at the gathering and the testimonies shared by community members signaled changing political sentiments across the country.

Hon. Saho commended Alagie Tumbul Kebbeh and the Council of Elders for their leadership and contribution to community development. He also praised the youths of Mariama Kunda for their discipline, organization, and active participation in the event.

Particular attention was given to a karate demonstration performed by local youths, which the lawmaker cited as an example of the talent and potential that exists within Gambian communities.

He emphasized the importance of sports in youth development, noting that karate not only promotes physical fitness but also enhances discipline, concentration, and mental well-being.

“What you have demonstrated here, especially in Karate, shows the kind of opportunities a UDP government would seek to expand for young people. Many people may not be familiar with Karate, but it contributes significantly to physical health and mental development,” he said.

Hon. Saho further commended the Mariama Kunda Karate Association for its efforts in nurturing young talent and fostering positive values among youths. He pledged that under a UDP-led administration, communities such as Mariama Kunda would receive greater support and recognition for initiatives that promote youth empowerment and social development.

The Central Badibou lawmaker also contrasted the UDP’s vision for youth development with what he described as short-term political gestures by the ruling party, arguing that sustainable investments in sports, education, and skills development would provide lasting benefits for communities.
