Ebrima G. Sankareh, the government spokesman, has confirmed the recall of Jerrehba Jammeh, Gambia’s Deputy Ambassador in Mauritania, and Abdoulie Conteh, Gambia’s Consul General in Saudi Arabia.

“I can confirm that our consul general Abdoulie Conteh (Gambia consul general in Saudi Arabia) has been recalled and in Mauritania when the president visited the Islamic Republic in January he contributed $5000 towards the Gambian community. The money was given to the ambassador. Subsequently, he handed it to his deputy and the deputy was to keep the money for safe transit to the people it was intended for; which was for the Gambian community in Nouakchott.

“A week or so later when they contacted him to deliver the money, he alleged that he had a relative who was under treatment in Turkey, he had actually borrowed the money but when he returned to Gambia he would pay the money back. It dragged on and he didn’t pay. So consistent with diplomatic protocols they decided that if that could happen to the deputy ambassador obviously he has to be recalled and he was recalled in February. One of the senior officials there hon. Saikouba Jarju was subsequently promoted to the rank of Deputy Ambassador to succeed Mr Jerrehba Jammeh,” Sankareh told West Coast Radio.

Retired Lt. Colonel Abdoulie Conteh, also known as Lie Conteh, was appointed Consul General to Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in January 2023. Jerrehba Jammeh has been serving as Gambia’s Deputy Ambassador in Mauritania since 2016.
