Honorable Seedy S. K. Njie, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly and Chairman of its Defence and Security Committee, has called for a unified continental approach to address the escalating insecurity across Africa.

The appeal was made during the official opening of the Chairpersons of Defence and Security Committees meeting in Abuja, Nigeria, according to a statement issued by the National Assembly.

Speaking at the event, Honorable Njie emphasized the urgent need for collective action by African armed and security forces to counter the growing threats posed by violence, armed robbery, terrorism, insurgencies, and banditry—challenges that continue to undermine stability in Sub-Saharan Africa.

“He highlighted the widespread effects of violence, armed robbery, terrorism, insurgencies, and banditry that continue to destabilise Sub-Saharan Africa. Njie stressed the critical role of national security forces in defending territorial integrity and sovereignty, while urging legislators and leaders to renew their commitment to protecting citizens and upholding internal security,” the National Assembly said in a statement.

The statement further notes that Honorable Njie emphasized the need for security forces to prioritize the protection of lives and property. He also called for a unified and continental approach to addressing security threats, underscoring that peace is essential for Africa’s socio-economic development and the well-being of its people.

In conclusion, he urged African lawmakers to place greater emphasis on defense and security issues, ensuring sufficient budgetary allocations to tackle the continent’s growing security challenges.
