The Gambia Immigration Department said it intercepted 46 people suspected of attempting to migrate through the irregular “backway” route during a joint operation in Niumi.
In a statement, the department said officers from its Barra Migration Management and Border Patrol units carried out the operation at Dembo’s Lodge in Sita Nunku after receiving what it described as credible intelligence. The operation was conducted with personnel from the Njongon Military Post and supported by the COP 2 Project.
According to the department, those intercepted included 38 Gambians, five Senegalese, two Malians, and one Ivorian. All were male, including eight minors.
The individuals were taken to the Barra Migration Management Office for profiling and are expected to be transferred to the Tanji Migration Management Unit for further processing and investigation, the department said.
The Immigration Department said the operation reflects its continued efforts to curb irregular migration through intelligence-led enforcement and closer coordination with partner security agencies.
