The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) said it had rescued 111 migrants after their boat became stranded in muddy waters near Aljamdu village during an apparent attempt to migrate irregularly.
The rescue was carried out in a joint operation involving immigration officers from Barra, state intelligence personnel, firefighters, and residents of Aljamdu, according to the department.
In a statement, the GID said the group included 75 Guineans, 15 Senegalese, 10 Ivorians, five Sierra Leoneans, four Gambians, one Malian, and one Ghanaian.
The migrants comprised 58 males and 53 females, including 12 minors.
“The rescued individuals are currently at the Barra Migration Office for profiling and further investigation,” the department said.
The GID said the operation underscored the importance of cooperation among security agencies and local communities in responding to incidents involving irregular migration.
The department did not provide details about the migrants’ intended destination or the circumstances that caused the boat to become stranded.
