Lawyer Assan Martin, spokesperson for Coalition 2026, has accused President Adama Barrow’s administration of surrendering control of key national resources to foreign interests, arguing that government policies in aviation, fisheries, and agriculture have disadvantaged Gambians.

Speaking in a recent interview with N24 Gambia, Mr. Martin criticized the government’s management of strategic national assets, alleging that agreements with foreign companies have undermined local economic opportunities.

He cited the airport contract as an example, questioning the government’s decision to entrust its operations to foreign companies.

Turning to the fisheries sector, Mr. Martin alleged that foreign operators, including Indian, Spanish, and Senegalese nationals, dominate fishing activities in Gambian waters, exporting valuable catches while leaving local consumers struggling with high fish prices.

“We are blessed and endowed with our fisheries. Go to Bakau, go to Tanji, and also go to Sanyang and Gunjur; all are our rivers. God blessed us with good fish, but fish is expensive today at the market,” he said.

Mr. Martin also criticized the government’s handling of agricultural subsidies, alleging that fertilizer intended to support Gambian farmers is being sold at unaffordable prices, with some supplies smuggled across the border.

He argued that these problems reflect broader failures in economic management, particularly the government’s inability to create sufficient employment opportunities for young people.

Describing youth unemployment as one of the country’s most pressing challenges, Mr. Martin said the Barrow administration lacked the vision and political will to address it effectively.

He presented Talib Ahmed Bensouda, the mayor of Kanifing and Coalition 2026’s presidential candidate, as an alternative, describing him as a leader with the foresight, experience, and energy needed to transform the economy.

According to Mr. Martin, the coalition has developed a plan to create 10,000 jobs within its first year in office, targeting university graduates and other unemployed young Gambians.

“We need the engine of the country, and Talib has that energy to move this country forward,” he said.

Mr. Martin maintained that a Bensouda administration would prioritize job creation, economic opportunities, and policies aimed at ensuring that Gambians benefit more directly from the country’s resources.

His allegations concerning foreign control of national assets, fishing licenses, and fertilizer distribution were not independently verified.
