The Gambia Immigration Department has intercepted 60 suspected irregular migrants in separate operations in the West Coast and North Bank regions as authorities step up efforts to curb irregular migration.

The operations were carried out by the department’s Border Patrol Unit and Migration Management Units, according to the GID.

On Monday, immigration officers intercepted 47 suspected migrants in Brusubi and Sambouya in the West Coast Region. The group included six Gambians, 38 Senegalese, and three Guineans.

Of those intercepted, 32 were male, and 15 were female, including three minors, the department said.

In a separate operation on Sunday, Oct. 4, the GID’s North Bank Region Border Patrol Unit intercepted 13 suspected would-be migrants in Essau.

That group consisted of five Bissau-Guineans, three Sierra Leoneans, two Guineans, two Ivorians, and one Malian. Nine were male, and four were female.

“GID calls on citizens, residents, community elders, civil society organizations, the media, and all stakeholders to join efforts to mitigate and eventually eradicate irregular migration in The Gambia,” the department said.

The GID said it remains committed to combating irregular migration while promoting safe, orderly, and regular migration in the country.
