The spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry said they are not condoning any behavior that will tarnish the integrity of the ministry.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is contemplating appropriate actions to be taken in the case of Melville Roberts, the Ministry’s Head of America Affairs Division who is being investigated of several rape allegations.

At least seven Gambian girls have accused Melville of rape prompting the Ministry to suspend him. Melville was in United Kingdom when the allegations against him came out.

The Justice Ministry has since opened a criminal inquiry into allegations against him and attorney general Abubacarr Tambadou has asked alleged victims to report their cases to the police and the Ministry.

In a letter to Melville 9 days ago, the Foreign Ministry have ordered him to return within 7 days or his diplomatic passport will be revoked.

The Ministry have also told Roberts that if he failed to return within 7 days, information on his status will be communicated to the British authorities.

Saikou Ceesay, the spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry, told Kerr Fatou on Wednesday that Melville has written to the Ministry but would not reveal the content of his letter.

However, Ceesay said the Ministry is advising itself on appropriate actions to take.

“We are working on something which will be communicated to him (Melville Roberts)…  The Foreign Ministry will not in any way condone anything that will compromise its (Foreign Ministry’s) integrity…,” said Ceesay.

Officially, Melville has not reported to Foreign Ministry and he has not returned to the country either, Kerr Fatou has been informed. Ceesay would not though comment of whether the Foreign Ministry has made good on its threat of revoking Roberts’ diplomatic passport.

Roberts has graduated at Oxford University with Masters in Diplomacy and International Law. Since the allegations against him came out, Roberts has denied any wrongdoing.
