Subject: Concerns Regarding Your Announcement for a Third Term

Your Excellency President Adama Barrow,

I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. I am writing to express my deep concerns regarding your recent announcement of a possible bid for a third term in the upcoming 2026 presidential elections. As a concerned citizen of The Gambia, I believe it is crucial to address these concerns and emphasize the importance of prioritizing the completion of unfinished business in your current term.

Firstly, I would like to highlight that your premature announcement for a third term raises questions about the focus and commitment to the responsibilities entrusted to you during your second term. The Gambian people elected you with the expectation that you would diligently address the issues that still remain unresolved from the previous administration. These unresolved matters, such as the new constitution, security sector reform, and the implementation of the findings of the Janneh Commission and TRRC, demand your immediate attention and effort.

The completion of the new constitution is an essential step towards ensuring good governance, upholding human rights, and establishing a framework for a transparent and accountable government. Similarly, the security sector reform is of paramount importance to ensure a professional and unbiased security apparatus that serves the best interests of the Gambian people. These initiatives require your undivided attention and a comprehensive approach to guarantee their successful implementation.

Furthermore, the findings of the Janneh Commission and TRRC provide crucial insights into the wrongdoings of the previous regime and the need to hold those responsible accountable for their actions. It is imperative that you prioritize the implementation of these recommendations to ensure justice and bring closure to the victims affected by the previous administration’s actions. By neglecting these responsibilities, we risk perpetuating a culture of impunity and hinder the healing process for our nation.

Your Excellency, I implore you to consider the potential consequences of overstaying in power. Throughout history, we have witnessed leaders in various African countries who attempted to extend their stay in power, only to be removed forcefully through violent means. The Gambia, having just emerged from a period of dictatorship, must strive to set an example of a smooth and peaceful transition of power. I urge you to exercise wisdom and gracefully exit the political stage at the end of your second term, in alignment with the principles of democracy and respect for the will of the people.

I have faith that you will carefully consider the concerns expressed in this letter and make the necessary adjustments to your plans for the benefit of The Gambia and its people. Your commitment to a successful transition and lasting democratic governance will be a testament to your leadership and leave a positive legacy for generations to come.

Thank you for your attention to this matter, and I remain hopeful for a prosperous and democratic future for The Gambia.

Yours sincerely,

Modou Gaye
