Kebba Jallow of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has said an opposition coalition headed by either Essa Mbye Faal or Talib Ahmed Bensouda would be unlikely to make a significant impact in the December presidential election.
Speaking on The Brunch on Kerr Fatou, Jallow argued that the opposition’s prospects suffered a major setback months ago when Bensouda and the United Democratic Party (UDP) went their separate ways.
Jallow, who said he has been involved in politics for more than 40 years, described the political separation as a significant blow to the opposition and an advantage for President Adama Barrow.
“That was a big blow. That was a blessing for President Barrow,” Jallow said.
He argued that an opposition arrangement bringing together Bensouda, UDP leader Ousainou Darboe and other political parties could have posed a serious challenge in the election.
But with Bensouda pursuing a separate political path from the UDP, Jallow said the opposition lost a crucial opportunity to build a formidable electoral alliance.
He predicted that President Barrow would win the Dec. 5 presidential election.
Jallow claims leadership of the People’s Progressive Party. However, the Independent Electoral Commission has recognized the PPP executive led by Madikay Faal as the party’s legitimate executive.
