The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) said it had detained 60 people suspected of attempting to undertake irregular migration, locally referred to as the “backway,” during an operation on Monday at Tanji beach in the West Coast Region.
In a statement, the department said the group included 10 Gambians, 47 Senegalese nationals, two Guineans, and one Ivorian. The individuals were discovered at a coastal hideout, the statement added, suggesting preparations for an attempted sea crossing.
The GID reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and maintaining the country’s territorial integrity, while calling on the public to remain alert.
“We urge communities and the general public to remain vigilant and report any unfamiliar movements to immigration authorities,” the statement said.
