President Adama Barrow has promoted three senior officers of the Gambia Armed Forces, including Chief of Defence Staff Ousman Gomez, who has been elevated to the rank of lieutenant general.
The promotions, announced on Aug. 4, also elevate Deputy Chief of Defence Staff Sait Njie from brigadier general to major general. Col. Alagie Sanneh, commander of the Republican National Guard, was promoted to brigadier general.
In a statement, the Gambia Armed Forces said the promotions were approved by Mr. Barrow in his capacity as president and commander-in-chief, exercising powers granted to him under the Constitution.
The military said the promotions followed the officers’ recent appointments as chief of defence staff, deputy chief of defence staff and commander of the Republican National Guard, respectively. Their new ranks, it said, reflect the responsibilities that come with those positions.
“On behalf of the entire Gambia Armed Forces, we wish to extend our heartfelt congratulations to the General Officers on their well-deserved promotions,” the statement said. “We equally wish them a successful and distinguished tenure in office.”
