The Government of Senegal has formally distanced itself from the candidacy of former President Macky Sall for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations, declaring it did not endorse or participate in the initiative.

In a diplomatic note dated March 27, 2026, the Permanent Mission of Senegal to the African Union in Addis Ababa clarified that Dakar “at no stage” supported Sall’s candidacy, despite ongoing discussions within the AU on backing a candidate for the top UN post.

The statement came in response to an earlier communication circulated within the AU regarding a draft decision to approve Sall’s nomination. Senegal further noted that it had not been associated with the initiative, which it said was undertaken by the Government of Burundi.

“Under these circumstances, Senegal cannot be considered as a party to the said process,” the note emphasized, underscoring a clear break between the former president’s bid and the current government’s official position.

The development adds a new dimension to divisions within the African bloc over consensus on a candidate for UN Secretary-General. It follows a separate communication from the AU Commission confirming that the proposed endorsement of Sall failed after multiple member states objected during the silence procedure.

The dual developments highlight both a lack of continental unity and the absence of backing from Sall’s home country—factors that could significantly weaken any potential candidacy on the global stage.
