Saikou Sawo, the presidential candidate of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), has urged opposition parties to unite ahead of the 2026 national elections, warning that fragmentation could weaken their ability to challenge the ruling party.

In an interview with West Coast Radio, Sawo emphasized the importance of a consolidated opposition, stating, “There needs to be a grand coalition because if people don’t come together, we stay fragmented.”

He noted that the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) has benefited from alliances and mergers with other political groups, giving it a strategic advantage. “If you look at NPP today, it’s a merger of different parties. We have CA, Hamat Bah’s party; it is not just NPP alone, so that tells you the opposition definitely needs to put aside their differences,” Sawo said.

The PPP flagbearer also highlighted his party’s willingness to engage in dialogue with other political parties and movements.

“PPP is open-minded; we want to start having these dialogues. I personally am always open. I’m reaching out to different leaders and movements and seeing how we can collaborate and come together because we are doing this for the betterment of Gambia; this is bigger than any programs, bigger than any of us,” he added.
