Kemo Bojang, UNITE’s Deputy Party Leader for Political Matters and Media Relations, has called on the United Democratic Party (UDP) to join UNITE ahead of the December 2026 presidential election, arguing that opposition parties seeking a change of government should work together to defeat President Adama Barrow.
Speaking in an interview with Mengbe Kering TV, Bojang said UNITE is focused on winning the election and would welcome the UDP’s support rather than having UNITE members return to the UDP.
“We want UDP to join UNITE and remove this government from power,” Bojang said.
He argued that UNITE does not regard other opposition parties as adversaries, saying the country’s challenges, including corruption, should instead be the focus of political competition.
“No opposition party is our enemy. Corruption and challenges facing the country are our enemies in this country,” he said.
Bojang said opposition parties that share the objective of changing the government should find ways to work together, particularly at a time when many Gambians are struggling to meet their basic needs.
He also pointed to the UDP’s unsuccessful attempts to win the presidency since 1996, arguing that its supporters should be open to considering a different political approach.
Using the analogy of a vehicle repeatedly failing to reach its destination, Bojang suggested that changing the driver could offer a better chance of reaching the intended goal.
He said UNITE is seeking support from Gambians across the political spectrum and is not relying solely on former UDP supporters as it prepares for the December election.
Bojang acknowledged, however, that the ultimate decision rests with voters, who will determine which candidate and political platform they believe can deliver the change they want.
