President Adama Barrow has laid foundation stones for new road projects in Yalal Tankonjala, Farafenni and Ngayen Sanjal in the Central River Region (CRR), as his administration moves to expand road infrastructure and improve connectivity across the country.
Speaking at a meeting in Njau, President Barrow described the projects as an important milestone for the region, saying the investments would improve access to essential services and stimulate economic activity.
The president said the foundation stone laid in Ngayen Sanjal marked the beginning of a 52-kilometer road project designed to improve connectivity in the Sanjal District and surrounding communities.
Barrow said the projects demonstrate his government’s commitment to infrastructure development and service delivery, describing improved road networks as critical to inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
“These road projects must not be welcomed merely as physical structures; they are a lifeline for the people, as they will connect farmers to markets, children to schools, and families to healthcare and other services,” he said.
The president said the roads would also help unlock the agricultural potential of Sanjal and neighboring communities by improving the movement of people, goods, and agricultural produce.
Describing the northern part of the Central River Region as one of the country’s major food-producing areas, Barrow said its economic development is closely linked to national prosperity.
“The prosperity of the region is directly linked to the prosperity of The Gambia. That is why my administration has prioritized infrastructure development here,” he said.
President Barrow also thanked residents of Ngayen Sanjal and surrounding communities for their patience and cooperation, acknowledging that major infrastructure projects can cause temporary disruptions.
He said those inconveniences would be outweighed by the long-term economic and social benefits expected from improved road connectivity.
