Kemo Bojang, UNITE Party’s Deputy Leader for Political Matters and Media Relations, has criticized President Adama Barrow’s handling of national security, arguing that persistent killings and other crimes should have prompted greater scrutiny from the National Assembly.
Speaking in an interview with Mengbe Kering TV, Bojang accused the government of failing to adequately protect Gambians and said a strong and independent Parliament should have considered a vote of no confidence in the president over the country’s security situation.
“If our Parliament was an independent and strong Parliament, they should have done a vote of no confidence in President Adama Barrow,” Bojang said. “All these murders that have been happening show he cannot save the Gambians.”
Bojang also challenged the government’s emphasis on roads, bridges, and other infrastructure as measures of development, arguing that physical infrastructure must be accompanied by improved security and better living conditions.
He said many Gambians continue to struggle with economic hardship despite the government’s infrastructure investments, citing the rising cost of living, corruption, and irregular migration among young people as issues requiring urgent attention.
Bojang also raised concerns about illicit drug trafficking, claiming that The Gambia has become a major transit point for narcotics in West Africa.
“Today, the number of illicit drugs that enter The Gambia does not happen anywhere in the subregion,” he said. “Today, The Gambia is the drug gateway of West Africa.”
Bojang did not provide data to substantiate his comparison between The Gambia and other countries in the subregion.
