The Banjul City Council on Friday hosted an official welcoming ceremony for the Mayor of North Miami, Alix Desulme, and his delegation at the council complex, underscoring the deepening partnership between the two cities.

Mayor Desulme has been in The Gambia from January 9 to 17, 2026, on an official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation, promoting cultural exchange, and advancing shared economic and municipal development goals under the Banjul–North Miami twinning arrangement.

Welcoming the delegation, the Mayor of Banjul, Rohey Malick Lowe, said the relationship was grounded in a commitment made three years ago to foster friendship, collaboration, and common development objectives.

She said the partnership had gone beyond the formal signing of a sister-city agreement, producing tangible results and demonstrating that cities separated by geography could still build meaningful connections that promote mutual understanding and shared progress.

“Banjul values this partnership immensely. We see in it a gateway to exchange, innovation, and enduring friendship. We are eager to learn, grow, and achieve alongside you. Please consider our doors always open, our hospitality ever extended and our commitment unwavering as we walk this path together,” she stated.

Mayor Lowe expressed appreciation to Mayor Desulme for visiting Banjul despite the demands of his office, and said she hoped the partnership would continue to deepen and expand.

Mayor Desulme, in his remarks, said the sister-city relationship had remained active and purposeful since its inception. He noted that officials from both cities have maintained regular communication, focusing on ways to improve the lives of residents in Banjul and North Miami.

“Looking ahead we are committed to deepening this collaboration. North Miami and Banjul face similar environmental changes, we continue to share best practices on climate resilience and other global warming mitigation and sustainability, and how that could work best for our cities,” Mayor Desulme said.

The partnership between the Banjul City Council and the City of North Miami was formally signed in 2023 under the Sister Cities Initiative. The agreement is designed to promote cooperation in areas including education, cultural heritage, and economic opportunity, while strengthening people-to-people ties and mutual understanding across borders.
