Dr Ismaila Ceesay, a Gambian political commentator and critic of the coalition Government is the interim secretary general of the Citizens’ Alliance, a new political party launched on November 29, at the Paradise Suite Hotel.
The new party promises a new dawn in Gambian politics. The Citizens’ Alliance is the tenth registered political party in the country which was handed its official confirmation letter by the Independent Electoral Commission on Friday.
“This party represents a new phase of Gambian politics…,” said Dominic Mendy, the interim chairman of the party.
Mendy who made a speech on the founding principles of the party, said they are going to hold congress in December 2019 or January 2020 to elect their party leaders.
Mendy said one can only be the presidential candidate of the party for only 2 five-year terms, according to their constitutions.
This will set a new trend in Gambian politics where individuals have been parties’ presidential candidates for over 2 decades or more.
Mendy said the Citizens’ Alliance is diverse to accommodate all the ethnolinguistic and social differences in the country.
