32 Candidates Nominated Ahead of The Mayoral And Chairmanships Elections

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has accepted the nominations of thirty-two candidates nationwide for the upcoming Mayoral and Chairmanship elections scheduled for May 20th, 2023.

The following political parties have nominated candidates:

  • National People’s Party (NPP): 8 candidates
  • United Democratic Party (UDP): 8 candidates
  • Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC): 2 candidates
  • People Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS): 1 candidate
  • People’s Progressive Party (PPP): 1 candidate
  • Gambia For All (GFA): 1 candidate
  • Independents: 11 candidates

Two of the thirty-two candidates are female, and the rest are male. Eleven are independent candidates. There are no differently abled candidates. No candidates were rejected.

The IEC commenced nominations of candidates on April 27th, 2023, and ended on May 3rd, 2023.

The Mayoral and Chairmanship elections will be held on May 20th, 2023. Voters will elect mayors and chairmen for the following municipalities and districts:

  • Banjul City Council
  • Kanifing Municipal Council
  • Kerewan Area Council
  • Brikama Area Council
  • Basse Area Council
  • Kuntaur Area Council
  • Janjanbureh Area Council
  • MansaKonko Area Council

The IEC is responsible for conducting elections in the Gambia. The Commission comprises five members, who the President of the Gambia appoints. The IEC is responsible for registering voters, conducting elections, and announcing the results of elections.
