Centre for victims of human rights violation of exiled former President Jammeh received clothes, rice and dates from former Gambian Diplomat.
The gifts are meant to facilitate their celebration of the Muslim feast [Koriteh] marking an end to the month of fasting [Ramadan].
Shortly, after presenting the donated items to the Victims, Madam Tuku Jallow, former Gambian Ambassador to the United Arabs Emirates (UAE) said her organization, Senegambia Democracy and Good Governance Organization (SENDGO) has been implementing projects to help the needy in the Gambia.
“Now that Ramadan is fast approaching its end, SENDGO found it necessary to satisfy the Eid-ul- Fitr needs of a special category of our society brought about by the callous and bestial treatment meted out to innocent persons during Yahya Jammeh’s defunct regime. They are provided with Zakat-ul Fitr, a fundamental Muslim ritual on the day of Eid-ul Fitr. They are also provided with textile that could serve as Eid-ul Fitr dresses, which is also not only a Muslim observance but a societal custom and norm,” Tuku Jallow observed.
Madam Jallow hopes the items donated would significantly help the beneficiaries to commemorate the occasion alongside their colleagues in society; while informing that her organization’s support is not only limited to the victims centre but also to the poor and needy people.
“SENDGO’s lofty charitable activities are not limited to the ventures stated above but also extend sponsorship to orphans and assistance to the poor and needy. It is as part of this humanitarian gesture that SENDGO and its Emirates partner deemed it wise to provide the poor and needy with assistance during the holy month of Ramadan so that they could break their fast with ease and in comfort,” she informed.
While speaking on behalf of the victims of human rights violation both the National coordinator Adama Jallow and chairman of the centre Sheriff Kijera, thanked the benefactor and her organization for the gesture, calling it a timely intervention.
“Most of the victims are unemployed. They don’t have a job. Some of them lost their bread winners which is difficult for them to get these kinds of items donated to them. I think it is a laudable gesture trying to support victims even though I was made to understand that Madam Tuku Jallow herself is a victim. We thank you Madam Tuku and your team for supporting the victims, it is indeed a timely intervention,” National Coordinator Jallow stated.
Meanwhile, Sheriff Kijera, Chairman for the centre said even though not every victim will benefit from the donated items, they thank the donor for extending support to them.
“We have registered more than thousand victims here in the Gambia Centre for Victims, not every victim will benefit from this noble gesture. But if one victim benefits, it means all the victims benefit from it. So, we are thanking Madam Tuku Jallow for supporting us. Even though Tuku herself was a victim of fighting for our democracy, the rule of law and to restore sanity in our governance architecture like all other victims, we will thank her for extending her support to us,” Kijera remarked.
